Two-barred Crossbills - the day after the day before!

I missed all of the excitement on Saturday, with at least six Two-barred Crossbills turning up across East Anglia, with four of them being in north Norfolk. So today I headed up to Cley where I picked up Mark Golley with the aim to try and find a 2-b Xbill of our own. First though we headed for a quick seawatch to see what was being blown in by the north-easterly winds. The best bird was a pale-phase Pom Skua, slowly gliding by, distinctly more broad and  rotund than the 7 or so Arctic Skuas that we also saw. A 1st-summer Little Gull, my first Red-throated Diver of the autumn, a juvenile Med Gull and good numbers of Gannets made for an interesting couple of hours. One of the Arctic Skuas, an adult dark-phase, flew over Eye Field and had a few dive-bombs at a Brown Hare, probably leaving the hare wondering what it'd done wrong!

Mark and I headed off to Walsey hills after the seawatch, but no sign of any crossbills of any kind and then we decided to finish the days' birding off with a walk from Stiffkey Fen along to Stiffkey Woods. The fen look quite good, with 9 Spooonbills, quite a few Med Gulls (adults and juveniles), 2 Green Sands, 5+ Common Sands, Common Terns, Whimbrel and about 50 Black-tailed Godwits. The walk along to Stiffkey Woods was pretty quite with very little to show for our efforts.

SPANISH IMPERIAL EAGLE: POPULATION IN 2012

Another year has passed and we can give our annual update on the population of the Spanish Imperial Eagle (Aquila adalberti) in the Iberian Peninsula and in Extremadura. We are rather late this year because we have been waiting for the publication of the official data from each Autonomous Community for 2012. But since this has not yet happened, and seemingly will not happen in the near future, we are providing only the figures for Extremadura and for the Iberian Peninsula as a whole, without being able to disaggregate the information by regions as usual. Nevertheless, the situation is excellent, with 380 pairs in the peninsula (370 in Spain and 10 in Portugal), 55 more pairs than the previous year, that is a 17% increase. Between 2006 and 2012, the population has grown by no less than 168 pairs, i.e. by 75%. Although the detailed regional figures are not yet available, in the last year the population has grown in all of the autonomous communities, especially in Castille-La Mancha, followed by Andalucia and Castille y Léon. In Extremadura there are five new pairs, with the total now a historic maximum of 53 pairs. So for the first time the 50 pair threshold has been crossed and there has been a 10% increase, breaking the levelling out that was shown over the last few seasons. Although the information is not yet available regarding the distribution of these new pairs in Extremadura, possibly the biggest growth has been in the centre and southern part of the province of Badajoz, in areas where the rabbit population is enjoying an excellent conservation state.

extinct birds

While we have a huge range of native extinct birds for visitors to see when they select a Madagascar wildlife holiday break, there is one kinds that visitors will unfortunately miss out on - by about 300 years! The Elephant Bird had been native to Madagascar before its extinct birds from the 17th century. The elephant extinct birds have been once famous - the actual explorer Marco Polo stated sighting the gargantuan creatures in his accounts of his voyages to the east in the twelfth and 13th centuries. The extinct birds were certainly an easy task to spot from a long distance, standing at over three metres tall and analyzing over 880 pounds!

Just like other huge extinct birds, for example the emu and the ostrich, it's thought that the Elephant Bird lacked the ability for flight - in the end, it would have obtained some serious muscle to lift a really heavy weight off the bottom, never mind keeping the item aloft for any length of time. Those on a Madagascar wildlife holiday will likely be pleased to note they are in no danger of having an exhausted Elephant Chicken land nearby - although it is certainly a shame such a striking species is actually extinct extinct birds. While it may seem like a mystery as in order to how flightless extinct birds got to an island to begin with, it is worth remembering that a land bridge to Madagascar possibly existed from Gondwana sooner or later in the past. It is thought that it served just as one invitation for many species to begin with life on what could later become an island.

It's a wide-spread belief that the reason behind the extinct birds of the actual Elephant Bird was, however, human hunting. With his or her immense size, they could have been popular for food, and there is evidence that the similarly massive eggs from the species were eaten likewise. Fragments of eggs are already found at ancient campsites, and so it would appear that the extinct birds were useful often for early humans. (A Madagascar wildlife holiday could be a very different experience indeed when the extinct birds of these extinct birds had not occurred! ) However, an alternative theory of the bird's termination was that human settlers produced new avian diseases to the island through the chickens along with other fowl they brought with these, and these were in charge of depleting the population. Although it might be a shame to regard, there is the component that through their removal on the ecosystem, other species were allowed to flourish - many that are the focus regarding Madagascar wildlife holidays today.
