My Garden Birds Last Week

Well the weather was very mixed for my garden birds last week. Lovely sunshine at the beginning of the week was replaced by strong wind, rain and a drop in temperatures with some sunny spells at times.

Only managed to catch this Goldfinch from a distance.

We have seen the Goldfinches again but it seems they are no longer collecting nesting material. They are up and down in the front and to

My Garden Birds Last Week

Following three weeks of being bedridden and barely able to move, it has been so good to finally sit in an armchair in the lounge and look out at my Garden Birds.

There is so much activity, I would say that as far as the birds are concerned, Spring is in the air!

Wood Pigeons and Collared Doves are without doubt nesting in the tall Conifer tree that stands in the garden behind our next

The RSPB | Big Garden Bird Watch

Well it's that time again, doesn't the time just fly? It's time once more to sit yourself down for an hour over the weekend and take part in the RSPB Big Garden Bird Watch.

All you need to do is watch the birds in your garden or local park for a one hour period sometime during this weekend (26 - 27 of January). You record the highest number of each bird species you see at the same time. You

Collared Doves Steal a Kiss

Despite the snow the birds must feed and there were many birds in my garden this morning. Away from the frenzied activity of the Starlings and the House Sparrows plus the fights between the Blackbird and Starlings, a Woodpigeon and a pair of Collared Doves sought a little solitude.

The Woodpigeon had his back to the Collared doves:

Blackbird in the Snow

This Blackbird was very entertaining whilst digging out the mealworms from beneath the fresh fall of snow. Holding his head on one side then the other and doing the "Blackbird" dance. Eventually he would plunge his beak into the snow and pull out a tasty morsel.

Latest Update | My Garden Birds

Over on my other blog "Life With Woodpecker"
I recently wrote about the problems I had encountered with my various
computing/internet devices. Well my tales of woe I am afraid did not
stop there. With everything up and running once more, I was eager to get
back to posting updates on the subject of my garden birds.

My Garden Birds

There seemed to be so many birds in the garden this morning, just for a spell at least. Another of those brief moments in time, when it seems that all the birds have been switched into feeding mode. It coincided with me sitting in my favourite spot by the glass doors leading onto the patio.

The birds were putting on a great show. The Robin was chasing a Wren, being rather a bully actually,

Blue, Great and Coal Tit influx

Following a few months which saw very few species appearing regularly in my garden, more birds are now beginning to show. Between 08:00 and 08:30 this morning, I have been watching Blue Tits, Great Tits and Coal Tits in an intense feeding attack on the cage feeder. It was great to watch this breakfast activity.

A Cold & Frosty Morning

Saturday just gone, started out as a very Cold and Frosty Morning. So cold in fact that the water in the bird bath was frozen into a solid block of ice. The coldest so far and the type of morning when I really feel for my garden birds.

Right on cue, as though summoned to appear because of the icy white conditions, a Robin flew into the garden. This was the first Robin I had seen here since

Blackbird On An Autumn Monday

A jotting from Monday.

A Monday morning in Autumn and I am using my Aspire netbook on the glass topped dining table while looking out onto the garden through the patio doors. It looks very damp out there and maybe a little on the cold side, just the sort of conditions that will aggravate my arthritis. I am happy to be inside, feeling nice and warm.

Starling flocks, Sparrowhawks and Takeaways

The events of Tuesday night involving flocks of Starlings and the Sparrowhawk, have prompted me to blow the dust off my keyboard and tell you another tale of my garden birds.

I am sure many of you will have seen through the medium of the television, the internet or maybe even first hand, the amazing spectacle of huge flocks of Starlings filling the skies prior to roosting. The birds come

Young House Sparrow Update

House Sparrows
Do you remember the young House Sparrow I showed you that had the white wings and tail?- Unusual Young House Sparrow - Well although there have been many of the youngsters coming into the garden, I have to say that I have not seen that cute little fellow again.

My Garden Birds | This Week

Looking back at the week with my Garden Birds.
It's been a funny old week - weatherwise that is - one minute it's sunshine, then heavy downpours of rain, then the next thing you know, out comes the sun again. But wind, rain or shine, nothing on the weather front stops the birds from visiting the garden.
Reflecting on the past week, it has been a rare moment indeed to look out on the back garden

My Garden Birds

The garden seems to be empty of birds at the moment, maybe due to the alarm that has been driving us daft for the last 20 mins, or the window cleaner who has come next door, or maybe next doors dog barking. Having said that, my garden birds have become so used to the dog barking that they all now seem to take no notice of it at all.

Just a moment ago the garden was awash with birds as it so

Starlings | Young birds in my Garden

Following our holiday in Devon last week, we have returned to find that there are a large number of young birds in our garden. Starlings and House Sparrows to be precise. Another recent report has stated that these two species of garden birds are still in rapid decline. I guess we must have more than our fair share of them because there are so many it is impossible to even hazard a guess at the

Collared Dove pencil sketch

I have started to make some sketches of my garden birds. It is early days yet and I have not practised drawing for quite some time, hopefully my efforts will improve.
Collared Dove This is a sketch of one of the regular Collared Doves that visit our garden. Of course it is nigh on impossible to identify individuals with any certainty, but in the afternoon a lone Dove feeds on the bird table then

An Overnight Frost

An overnight frost had painted the garden white, the air was still, the sky clear, and it appeared to be very cold outside. Like yesterday, the bird bath was frozen and I could see from the patio doors that the bird table was empty, no food there for my garden birds.
I made ready the food and water, donned my coat and boots and braved the cold of another January morning. It was apparent that the

New Year day 2

This morning soaked bread put on the garage roof yesterday was being wolfed down by a flock of Starlings, Sparrows and Wood Pigeons. In no time at all there was not a trace to show that it had ever been there.
Starlings were soon all over the bird feeder pole and the bird table, fighting and squabbling, making their usual racket and tucking into the lardie cakes and fat balls. House sparrows then

More Snow and the birds must be fed

Once more we awoke to find that outside of the warmth and shelter of our house, everywhere was covered in a fresh fall of Snow and the birds must be fed.
They depend on us more and more in this weather and so we do what we can to help them out.

Here is a nice freshly made bird cake made with lard, currants, sultanas, mixed seed and grain. Mmm, delicious.

Blackbird and the Grapes

10.00am and I am looking out through the kitchen window, watching the rain that has been falling steadily all night. The tall Conifer moves with the wind as though alive, swaying to and fro while deep within the evergreen foliage, birds take shelter, keeping a firm grip as they are tossed about like sailors on a stormy sea. This heavy rain and blustery wind is forecast for the entire day.
