By Mike Hienstat

Having a dog is one of the most pleasing experiences in many people's lives. Sadly, however, a lot of prospective owners give up on their dream of owning one because they think they don't have the space or time to take care of a pooch. However, normally this is not the reality of the situation. So here are the top 5 benefits of own a small dog breed that will show you just how simple it can be.

When you have a little canine, you actually don't need a very large space. While those that are much bigger do need more square footage, the majority of small dog breeds are perfectly happy in a small apartment. That's because to them it seems huge. This is phenomenal news for those who have limited space since it allows them to enjoy owning a pooch just like everyone else!

When going little you are lucky to have a huge variety of breeds to choose from. Whether your preference is small white dog breeds, something with long hair, floppy ears, or breed known to be extra intelligent there is something for everyone. Because each specific breed does have its own characteristics physically and even personality wise, it's not difficult to find one that will be a great match for you.

For exercise, you won't have to worry about spending multiple hours per day walking or jogging with your pet as is often the case with medium and large size dogs. Each breed and even individual dog will have its own needs but in general they need only a fraction of the time and effort to keep them healthy and happy. Even though a few popular small dog breeds such as the Jack Russell Terrier may be high energy it's still a much more manageable situation for the average owner than dealing with a pooch that's bigger in size.

Owning a dog regardless of its size does mean you'll have some added expenses. But the smaller the pet the less they are. This means everything from food and toys to medicine and veterinary procedures. Small sized dog breeds can save you a ton of cash just because they require less of everything.

An excellent trait that many owners don't even consider, is that little pooches can be extremely good watchdogs. They most likely aren't going to be able to stop an intruder but they may be able to deter them with their barking and alert you to their presence. Many breeds in the terrier group are especially well-known for this characteristic.

As you can see there are a ton of benefits to owning a petite canine, so don't automatically assume you don't have the resources to take care of one. With so many small dog breeds to choose from, you will be sure to find yourself a furry little friend that makes your life complete.
