Things To Know About Cavachon Pups

By Raymond Brooks

Dogs make wonderful companions who are always there to make a person feel loved, to entertain, to comfort, and who are infinitely loyal. When the time come to choose a new pet, it is important to make sure to opt for an animal whose health risks, grooming needs, personality characteristics, general behavioral traits, and activity levels, are suitable to the way one lives their life. Cavachon pups are a designer breed that has many attractive qualities that make them great for most any situations.

Created my mixing a pure specimen of each of the Toy breeds, Bichon Frise and Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, these dogs are quite rare and difficult to breed. Acceptable results are often achieved when mating two first generation Cavachons but some of the more desirable qualities may be diminished when breeding subsequent generations. As a mixed breed, most major or national kennel clubs do not recognize them and have not set any official authoritative standards for them.

The dogs are small, with a typical adult being no more than eighteen pounds and thirteen inches fully grown. Although various shades of white, peach, and brown are the most common coloring, they can have other colors as well. With coats that are either curly or slightly wavy, but silky, thick, and soft, they shed very little and produce minimal dander.

They should have an lifespan of between 15-20 years when given the proper care and regular checkups to maintain their health. Issues that typically plague small dogs such as heart murmurs, eye ulcerations resulting from hair rubbing against their eyes, and flea allergies, are common. Fur tends to grow into their ears which need to get weekly cleanings to avoid infections.

Cavachons are very friendly, gentle, affectionate, intelligent, social, and energetic but not hyperactive. They require daily walks or activity to burn off some of their extra energy though they are generally very well behaved indoors. These dogs form very deep bonds with their humans and are most content when in the company of attentive people or other household pets.

As far as grooming requirements go, this breed does have some fairly high maintenance needs. Even though they shed very little, they are rather hairy and their coats have a tendency to become matted. One may find that if they do not make the time to brush their pet on a daily basis, they could end up paying for routine professional trimmings and treatments.

This is an intelligent breed and the dogs are relatively fast learners when training is done consistently. It is best to begin their socialization and behavioral education while very young so that they do not form negative habits first that will have to be overcome. The sooner their obedience conditioning starts, the better the results will be.

Those who travel a lot or use recreational vehicles, suffer from dander allergies, or have small homes or apartments, might find Cavachons to be a great option. These dogs are very social and bond well with other pets, children, and older individuals. Although a small breed, they can provide a great amount of companionship and comfort, endless love, and infinite loyalty.
