By Sarah Graham

Groups devoted to adopting pets are referred to as animal rescue groups or organizations. These groups usually take in pets that have been abandoned, abused, stray and unwanted in order to find them an appropriate home. These services are usually offered by people who volunteer to keep them in their own homes and provide them the needed care. This is what Dallas Animal Rescue foundation are all about.

Care that is provided to these animals is diverse, but includes solving behavioral problems, providing medical care, playing, feeding, and training. The animals are taken care as long as they have not found a permanent home. Permanent homes usually come in the form of people who want to acquire pets. The individuals can then take the animals to their homes and make them their pets.

Rescue groups are present for almost all kinds of pets such as pigs, dogs, cats, birds and reptiles. The most common rescue groups are for dogs and cats. These groups may also focus on a specific breed of a particular animal. For example, there are groups that focus on rescuing parrots, Burmese cats, ragdolls dogs, German shepherd dogs and Labrador retrievers among others.

Some organizations specialize in rescuing and rehabilitating wild animals, including tigers, cheetahs, leopards, lions, rhinos, elephants, deer, crocodiles, and eagles among many other. Such organizations work in close association to conservation charities such as zoos. In most cases, after rehabilitation the animals are released back into the wild so that they can live the rest of their lives normally. However, it is not always that wild animals are released back into the wild.

Some of the animals remain in custody for breeding purposes. This is normally in a case where the animal involved is an endangered species. While in custody, an endangered animal is safeguarded against human factors and natural factors that bring about its extinction. This assists in raising the number of the species to healthy level. Animals are released from custody into the wild if the threat of extinction is established not be a possibility.

Normally, animal shelters work in close connection with rescue organizations. The reason is that shelters like to place animals that they cannot care for anymore in a home instead of euthanizing them. There is normally a limited amount of space to hold animals in shelters. Therefore, if the carrying capacity is exceeded, the population needs to be reduced. Rescue groups hardly run out of space however.

These organizations occasionally find volunteers who keep the animals in their homes for a short period of time. It is estimated that around 3 and 4 million cats and dogs are euthanized annually due to scarcity of sustaining space. Usually, some of the animals are healthy and worthy of being pets. Rescue groups help to eradicate or moderate this practice.

Rescue organizations operate in different ways. There are those that own their own premises where the animals are kept until someone comes to adopt them. Other organizations use buy in accommodation from commercial kennels, while other operate in the form of foster home networks. In foster home networks, animals stay with volunteer until a home is found for them.
