What To Keep In Mind When Breeding Exotic Cats

By Martha Hill

Adventurous pet owners do away with the tamed and domesticated trope and go for animals that have feral and wild as their hallmark. And so they go for upgraded dogs or birds or fishes. Some are also Breeding Exotic Cats Nebraska.

A word to the wise, though. If you have taken it up in your head to hoard wild animals, you had better give up the germ of the idea. You might have been blindsided by those instances you see in the popular media where lions, tigers, foxes, and bears get along so well with their humans its almost natural. However, thats anything but natural. If you think you can just easily pick out a wild creature from its habitat and domesticate it on the dot, you are about to have your dream ship wrecked by the sharp rocks of reality.

First off, for stage setting, lets establish the definition of a pet. In its basic sense, these are domesticated animals that are kept as companions. A wild animal, on the other hand, has otherworldly instincts and a mind of its own. It can keep itself well and alive, and if caught in captivity, human interference is most likely bane than boon to them.

However, you want it to be, they just dont fit well into the tapestry of human life. They operate on another plane and system, but human interference is more bane than boon to them. For some reason, pet exotic cats have come to mean lynxes, bobcats, ocelots, and caracals in the mainstream. These relatively small cats take anything from small rodents to deer as their meal, but that doesnt make them any less wild than tigers and lions, for example.

But if youre still holding on that pipe dream, its good to know that you actually have an option, with Bengal cats. They were initially bred from the Asian leopard cat and the domestic shorthair. Bengals are now four generations away from the wild, and though they still look like wildcats on a prowl, they are actually thoroughly domesticated.

You might be initially cowed by its feral physiognomy, but bowled over with surprise as they play with you and shower with human like affection. These felines are so playful, energetic, intelligent, and sociable. More uniquely, they have this strange proclivity for water. So you might want to look out for your ponds and aquariums. They are also supposedly talkative. In cat terms, this means that they just vocalize too much. And weird vocalizations they do too, with the chirping, growling, hissing, and meowing all together. They also dont like to be left along for long, and theyre almost preternaturally close to their owner.

However, they can be a bit pricey. One cat fancier bought her own Bengal for fifty thousand dollars. Perhaps that is why theyve been dubbed as the Rolls Royce of feline companions.

Look for a breeder that knows what hes doing. That not as straightforward as it sounds. The proper breeder will be able to produce healthy and well adjusted kittens. The cats must also be accorded the necessary medical attention and vaccinations, and likewise certified and licensed by the TICA and CFA.

Owning a pet may all be for companionship or pleasure. What is not often considered is that it is also a responsibility. So one should be pretty invested and committed once he decides to take care of one.
