Discovering Alternative Holistic Healing For Animals

By Carol Fox

When pets are ill or injured, it can often be heartbreaking. Taking an animal to the veterinarian can also be expensive. As such, these issues have led to a new practice, holistic healing for animals.

In one example, after owners discovered a cat was not going to get any better after becoming paralyzed, the owners sought advice. In the process, the owners found Dr. Valerie Trudel whom owned an acupuncture and osteopathy clinic for animals. As such, the owners took the cat to Dr. Trudel. Upon examining the cat, the doctor feared the only option would be euthanasia.

Upon an initial examination, Dr. Trudel's first instinct was to prepare the cat's parents for the worse. Instead, the owners ask the veterinarian to try anything and everything that could prevent such an outcome. While at the same time, the owners knew that doing so could be a long, expensive and difficult journey. Nonetheless, the owners decided to move forward with alternative forms of treatment.

Since the issue seemed to be one related to movement, Dr. Trudel decided to provide the cat with an acupuncture treatment. Upon leaving the clinic, the cat was laying on his stomach, though upon returning home, the owners noticed he was laying on his side. As such, with a glimmer of hope, the owners took the cat inside and kept a close watch on the animal for a full 24 hours.

After two weeks, the owners returned to Dr. Trudel's practice for a follow-up exam. At that point, the cat was walking at a normal pace. While a shock to Dr. Trudel and the owners, especially considering the initial condition of the cat, there have many stories like this among individuals whom have obtained alternative and holistic pet care. As such, many animals have been saved from euthanasia and gone on to live long and healthy lives.

While a small number of veterinarians started using these alternative forms of treatment a few years ago, the growth of holistic animal practitioners and veterinarians whom now use a combination of traditional and holistic medicine has been steady over the last few years. In fact, some veterinarians like Dr. Barnes at the Spa Paws Wellness center in Fort Worth, Texas often recommend trying a holistic approach before moving forward with traditional medications or surgeries.

Throughout the life of a pet, a number of pet owners have discovered that traditional forms of medication are often harsh on digestive systems, or do not do enough to treat a condition. As most pet owners consider pets a part of the family, owners will often do anything and everything to give pets the best care possible and if at all possible, avoid euthanasia. For, due to the human connection to nature, animals often fill an essential emotional need of owners and family members.

While traditional veterinarians and practices have discovered new and safer treatments for animals over the last few years, so too have alternative providers such as that of Dr. Trudel and Dr. Barnes. For, if an animal can be healed through osteopathy, acupuncture or natural medications, it can often be far less intense or invasive to the animal than traditional forms of medications and surgeries.
