By Mike Hartwick

Owning a dog can be a serious commitment. It can also be very expensive especially if they are quite big. Luckily, everything is easier and cheaper when it comes to owning one of the small dog breeds.

With so many fantastic breeds to choose from anyone can find a dog with traits and characteristics that meet their needs. That's because each breed is unique from its color and size to personality type.

If you are interested in having a pet with a lot of energy, the Jack Russell Terrier is a big dog in a small package. Actually it is considered to be one of the most high energy breeds of all. This fact makes them ideal for adults who are fun-loving and active along with families that have older kids. You should expect to provide a solid hour of play or exercise per day to satisfy the needs of these intelligent and lively little dogs.

Small dog breeds with a ton of energy are not everyones cup of tea. A more laid back choice is the Pug. Prized as a lap dog in China they make great pets for people living in apartments and with limited space. They only need a quick walk once per day to keep them happy. Yet, care should be taken not to take them out when it's too hot since they are not heat tolerant.

Picking the name of your little pooch is often one of the most entertaining parts of purchasing a dog. It can be downright hilarious to name small dog breeds after things which are really big for example. Many of the top female and male dog names also come from favorite films or novels. Just be sure it is something you personally like since you will be using it all the time.

If you have always wanted to own a dog but thought you didn't have enough space think again. There are small dog breeds that can thrive in even very limited spaces and of course offer you their unconditional friendship and love.
