Assisi Animal Health: What To Know About Hugging Dogs

By Robin Setser

Pet owners like to know appreciation for their animal friends in a number of ways. One of the most common gestures are hugs, which is understandable since it's common among humans. With that said, are hugs necessarily as comfortable for canine animals as they are for their owners? After you're done with this piece, you might be surprised to learn that there are better ways to show your pet that you care, as I'm sure Assisi Animal Health can attest as well.

Chances are that you have given your dog a traditional hug, which makes sense. After all, you might be overjoyed when your pet learns a new trick or when they take part in an action that might be deemed positive. However, companies such as Assisi Animal Health will tell you that traditional hugs are not exactly the best for dogs. As a matter of fact, the way that humans should show affection are worlds apart from how pet owners interact with their animals.

One of the things to know about dogs is that they show happiness in different ways than humans. For example, a canine with a positive demeanor will usually have their tail up or have it wagging from side to side. What you might not know about dogs, though, is that traditional hugs around the shoulders are often registered by dogs as signs of dominance. With this in mind, pet owners should know that there are more effective ways of displaying affection.

Even though some dogs dislike hugs, this doesn't mean that this is the case across the board. As a matter of fact, this is why you have to make note of your dog's posture or stance during the embrace. For example, if your pet starts to tense up in your arms, that's a sign that something is amiss. There are better ways to show affection, some of the best methods being gentle scratching on the head and behind the ears of your dog.

With these details in place, you can clearly see that hugs are not exactly the best methods for showing your dog that you care. However, it's also evident that better methods exist for this exact purpose. If you see that your pet is visibly uncomfortable, you should adjust your methods to make them better for your pet. By doing so, your abilities as a pet owner will become that much sharper for the future.
