How To Pick The Right Quilting Fabrics And Notions For Your Next Project

By Christopher Baker

Making functional and beautiful items for your home is something that many craft makers love to do. If you have been thinking about making a quilt for your home, there are some specific quilting fabrics and notions that you will need. If you have never shopped for them before, here are some things that you may want to keep in mind.

When creating one of these pieces, it is not uncommon for the back of the piece to be fairly plain and made out of a material that compliments the other fabrics used. If you are making a smaller version you may be able to use a single piece of material. Larger versions will often need multiple pieces of material.

Quilts had fairly humble beginnings. They were created in order to keep people warm and it was not uncommon to find multiple layers of quilts used when the weather became very cold. As time went on, they became a form of functional art. Quilters worked hard to create beautiful patterns both with the fabric and with the stitching that was used throughout the piece.

Fabric is likely the first thing that people think about when they make their list of supplies to buy. Many times in the past, quilts were made from scraps of different fabrics that were left over from other projects. This has changed. Now, a quilt maker will often choose specific fabric that can be used to create a specific pattern and may often choose fabrics that are made out of cotton or other similar fabrics.

Insulating your quilt is more important in a functional quilt than it would be in a piece that was meant to be used as art. If you want to make sure that the piece you make is very warm, look for batting that is designed for colder weather. It may not be thicker than batting used in quilts for moderate climates but it will be warmer.

Thread is used in many different places when making a quilt. Often, crafters will use plain thread in colors that compliment the fabric when stitching the pieces together. There are special threads that you may want to use on the front to create the pattern. Look for options that have a metallic sheen to give your piece some extra sparkle.

Once people have their fabric, batting and thread they may think they have everything they need to create a piece. While it is possible to finish the work without any special equipment, it is at least a good idea to have a frame that you can use to keep the material taut while you quilt it. You may need to make sure you have special needles that are long enough to pass through all of the layers of material as well as this will make stitching much easier.

There are many places to find notions and equipment. You can look at crafting or fabric stores. There are also websites that will allow you to choose from a wider range of options than you may be able to find locally. Then, you can begin to create beautiful pieces that you can hand down from generation to generation.
