English Bulldogs For Sale In Missouri Can Make Wonderful Pets

By Patrick Wilson

The popularity of certain dog breeds changes with time. The animals that were most admired by one generation, are ignored by another. Through the years, the English bulldog has remained somewhere on the popularity list, but not at the top. There are sports fans who would love to own a replica of their favorite football mascot and others who are intrigued by their unique appearance and might be interested in English bulldogs for sale in Missouri though.

These dogs are instantly recognizable because of their strange squat bodies, huge heads, meaty jowls, and tiny legs that don't seem sturdy enough to hold them up. It may be difficult to imagine, but the breed was prized at one time for its ability to bring down a full grown bull. Today their owners love them for the calm and pleasant demeanor they display. The puppies can be very playful and active, but they settle down as they grow up.

Anyone who is thinking about purchasing a pet from a breed unfamiliar to them needs to spend a little time researching the temperament associated with it. You will want to be aware of what can cause bad behavior in the animal. These animals for instance, do not play around when it comes to meal time. They are very territorial about their food dish and getting in their way can have a bad result.

These dogs are not athletes or active, energetic animals. If you do not insist, they are usually perfectly content to spend day after day napping and eating. They do need regular exercise however. Without it, they tend to pack on the pounds, which can lead to problems. Because they are fairly sedentary animals, they can live very well in small condos or apartments. Bulldogs can be a good fit for older people who have trouble getting around.

Training these dogs can be an issue because they really don't have any interest in it. Without plenty of doggy treats and loving physical contact you will have trouble getting them to learn even the basics. They will definitely not respond to harsh treatment or loud commands.

These animals do have some health issues that owners need to be aware of. They have very large heads in contrast to their small bodies, and most will not live more than twelve years. If you plan to breed your pet, you should expect the puppies to be brought into the world via cesarean section. The dogs are prone to deafness, hip dysplasia, eye problems, cancer, and cleft palate. Regular vet visits will help catch potential problems.

These are short haired animals that do not need a lot of grooming. They need to be bathed if they have gotten into something dirty or smelly. Most bulldogs have bad breath, so oral hygiene is important for them. The deep folds in their faces have to be kept washed and dried to avoid bacterial infections.

Dogs are great companions that usually become beloved members of the family. Before you accept the responsibility for a pet however, you should make sure the breed is a good fit for you and your household.
