This breed hails from one of the many mastiff breeds that was popular during the ancient Greek era. Phoenician traders made the wide distribution of the breed throughout Europe possible. Its main was for adversarial combat against bulls in the arena in the sport of bull baiting. Many of the bulldogs and mastiffs were later on made into pets as the sport was soon outlawed in many countries.

A cousin, of the well known English bulldog, it is of a much smaller size and has more erect ears, although it has a more compact body and shorter legs. As regards temperament however, this dog is less alpha prone as the English bulldog, and can get quite well along with other animals and even small children in the house.

It is a breed that makes for an excellent companion throughout its natural life, except that it may extremely want more attention than one can give. When it feels neglect it it will let out a yodel, which many owners have come to name as the French death yodel. When having females of this breed, do expect them to be very protective of their young and of everyone around them.

Like its English counterpart, this breed also does quite well living in small places, . Such adaptation to living conditions sees it as a viable candidate for small house or apartment urban living. Quite content with just being lazy the whole day and not moving so much, they should also be given ample space to give their little legs a stretch. A thirty minute daily walk outside will more than suffice, thus this low outdoors upkeep make them probably one of the ultimate indoor dogs.

As it does have a more compact airway and snub nose, it will have problems regulating its temperature just like the English variety. It is not a pet for extreme weather situations, like extreme cold or heat for it can die. It is a pet really designed for living in countries with temperate climates. So if you live in a tropical country this dog is not one for you, as you may need to keep it in a controlled temperature environment if you can afford it.
