When these dogs are fully grown it is about 13 inches and below with the weight of approximately 20 lbs. The dog can be found in many colors the common ones being black, red, red merle, blue merle some of them with white markings. Their coat is medium length making them resistant to weather with their fur in between straight to wavy. Some have a moderate mane which is usually more noticeable in male dogs. They have an undercoat that varies depending on the climatic conditions that prevail in the area where the dog grows up.

When you get your dog from the breeder, you should know that it is your responsibility to train the dog on good behavior and to show it what to stay away from and what not. The puppies are known to be intelligent in such a way that they will take lessons quickly during training. Make sure that you start the training early before the puppies grow up for it will not be easy to train them when they are fully-grown.

These animals are excellent manners and can hardly cause trouble unless when are provoked to do so. When there is a reason to defend their master they do so with enthusiasm. Most of them take it upon themselves to protect the master and their property.

This dog is good naturally and very active and in most instances will portray the reserved quality. Even if the dog is very easy to train, at times they are very selective and will not be willing to be bothered. You will realize that they are not ready to cooperate with you or follow your commands when they squint their eyes or when they grin in a funny way.

Just like the other dog breeds, this one needs brushing at least twice every week. Frequent brushing will help in reduction of shedding and more so, for the Australian shepherd that sheds a lot. The extra energy with the puppy should be shed off with regular exercises.

Before you take the dog home, you have to make sure you have taken it from a reputable breeder. Make sure your breeder in reliable and has made your pet through all the necessary immunization vaccines. Find out whether the company is registered with the national society for the breeders. That way you will be sure you are taking your pet from a serious breeder, and you are not like to be disappointed in the end.
