What To Know Before Visiting Beagle Breeders In California

By Rebecca Sanders

Nothing beats having a pet and many people have either chosen a cat or a dog for the sole purpose of companionship. You may have decided on getting a dog and some of your friends have suggested that you visit the nearest beagle breeders in California for a possible puppy purchase. However, before you do decide on the beagle do read on in this article for more information.

Before the 1700s the beagle was used as a hunting hound, and it currently is still classified as such. However it came into disfavor due to its slow speed when compared to the foxhound, which later replaced it as a hunting dog of choice. Many however still retained the beagle as a hunting hound when it came to hunting smaller prey such as rabbits, while most however became just pets and household companions.

Being a hunting dog it will have a fair bit of energy, and it may have a hard time adapting to indoor living and particularly small space living. They will need their fair share of walks and are very free spirited meaning they will chase after anything that catches their interest. This breed also barks a lot, and a lot is an understatement. Thus it may not be good to keep it in areas with a lot of neighbors.

The beagle is highly intelligent and needs something to do at each moment of time. Should it be bored it will do a lot of chewing on things and may even do some digging. Thus it is important to give it lots of mental stimulation and also a lot of attention. Left to their own devices and when they do get bored, they have a tendency to get destructive.

Despite its intelligence, it is a dog that is quite difficult to train as it seems to have problems associating rewards with commands. It is therefore a stubborn breed and really not meant for an inexperienced dog owner A lot of patience is needed in owning this breed as it also takes a while for it to be housebroken as well.

The breed can live anywhere from ten to fifteen years on average depending on how we look after it. It will also achieve a hefty weight of anywhere from eighteen to thirty pounds upon maturity. Also a full grown beagle will stand a little over a foot at the shoulder from the ground.

One of the best skills that this dog has is that it is a super sniffer, and many say that it is a nose on legs. It likes to sniff a lot of things and these dogs have been known to be great drug and bomb sniffer dogs. Thus you will always see this dog sniffing all the time looking for something interesting to sniff at or smell.

These dogs do not make the very good guard dogs at all due to their friendly nature. This friendliness also make them easy prey for thieves. As such they must be kept inside as much as possible to prevent them from being dog napped by unscrupulous persons.
