Essential Pet Supplies For New Owners

By Karen Thomas

Becoming a pet owner for the first time can be both an exciting and daunting experience. Taking care of a pet, many say, is much like having a child, and this is probably the best way to get some practice in on being a parent before the real deal! Every owner needs a basic set of pet supplies to help accommodate the newest member of the family as best as possible.

It's safe to assume that a pet owner has done his or her research into the kind of pet coming into the home, especially if it is a special breed or species. Knowing about a breed's characteristics, that may be different to other animals of its kind, can make all the difference in how well the pet adjusts to its new home. One example is dogs that are meant to live in the cold; keeping it in a tropical climate outdoors will inevitably be detrimental to its health and so air-conditioning would probably be best.

It's necessary to do the research on the background of a particular animal in order to get the right supplies to take care of it. Certain pets require more grooming attention than others, while some animals' dietary needs should be a priority above all else. This will also help when it comes to budgeting expenses for a pet.

Your pet needs three things first and foremost: a sleeping area, a bathroom area and an eating area. No matter what type of animal you get, make these areas as comfortable as possible so that it really feels like home to them. Be consistent about where the pet relieves itself so that toilet training does not become difficult.

Pad up a dog or cat's bed sleeping area to provide lots of warmth and comfort. Puppies can be fussy when they leave their mothers to go to a new owner, so making them as comfortable as possible will make this an easier transition. Consider if it's possible to place the sleeping area nearby to the humans during the night. Layer up some blankets for cats, who have a tendency to "make the bed" when settling down to sleep.

Make sure that birds have enough room to stretch their wings. In fact, all animals need ample room for movement and most animals will need some form of exercise at least once a day if there is no outdoor space like a yard to run in. This particularly applies to dogs, and so it is necessary to get a good leash and collar or harness for dog-walking as part of the basic supplies.

A pet's food supplies should be very carefully considered, as this will set the tone for its health and well being overall. Buying food in bulk is a great way to save some money, but it's necessary to store food properly so that it remains fit for consumption. Personalize the pet's food containers for a special touch and consider heavier food and water bowls for bigger animals to avoid mess.

Pets will require some form of entertainment, and there are lots of toys that can do this. This is key in homes where the humans will be gone for extended periods of time, either at work or school. Toys also help with their growth and development. There are also toys that can assist with grooming or health issues of a pet.
