Quite a few pet owners will want to try something different in their lives at least one in their choice of pets. They may want something more exotic or even less mainstream to satisfy their curiosity. And when it comes to felines, you can also get less mainstream by choosing the safari cat. This breed is created when crossing a domestic short hair and a Geoffroy's Cat, which is a close relative of the South American ocelot. This breed is hard to come by for there are differences in chromosomal pairs of wild cats and domestic ones. Thus the Safari coming about is a miracle at best. The first successful breeding of for this cat occurred in the 1970s.

This breed can be quite expensive due to their difficulty to breed, especially with first generation or F1 cats. This is because the male Geoffroy's Cat may sometimes attack and kill the female Domestic shorthair. With successful breeding they are slightly larger than the Geoffroy's Cat but they also have a much docile and calmer temperament and are described as delightfully gentle creatures.

According to TICA, or The International Cat Association registry, there are only about 70 owners of this exotic pet. Exotic is a term given when a breed is a result of the cross breeding of a wild parent with a domesticated one. This breed has the same distinction as Chausi, Bengals and Savannah cats as being exotic, but is considered as the "Rolls Royce of Exotic Cats".

Appearance wise they do look very svelte and longer than a domestic cat, and they also come in many different colors. The color difference is interesting to note occurs depending on the geographical location of this breed, ranging anywhere from black to silvery grey to deep orange.

It is not so difficult to take care of this breed as it does not need a lot of care and not so finicky with its food. It can be quite happy with ordinary cat food, but actual owners prefer to give it a special mix that includes a bit of raw meat.

This breed is a very active breed and more suited for more active owners. It is naturally curious of its surroundings and anything it comes in contact with. Due to this it can get into trouble sometimes.

Temperament wise it is quite a joy to have around when it is properly socialized. It is very smart and thus can be termed as the cat version of the dog, and can also listen and follow simple to complex commands. Like the dog, it can get close to family members very fast, and is usually not trusting and ever watchful of strangers. The Safari is a cat that is also quite long live, living anywhere from fifteen to twenty years.
